Summer 2014
Posted by Kevin Holly on Friday, July 18, 2014
Well, it finally arrived. And just like that, the grass took over and we were pushing our lawnmowers through much-too-high
weeds & grass in Rita Park.
The Association would like to thank Jack Campbell for his hard work keeping the park looking well manicured over the years. He's a tough act to follow. Hopefully, we will be back in the black in 2014-2015 and will be able to, once again, enjoy the luxury of hiring out our park maintenance to Jack. Until then, we count on everyone to chip in to keep the grass cut. I think it would be fun to cut it with a team....I'm picturing snow-plough formation with 5 lawnmowers in succession cutting a 12 foot swath. THAT would be something to see :)
.....Yes, we ran out of money in 2013-2014. Why? We took down a dead tree over the winter and we've been running a little low over the past few years due to lapsed memberships. We'd like to change that and start keeping a small fund for incidentals (like dead trees).
As you may know, the executive has met a few times over the year to brainstorm the revival of Rita Park. Most recently, a small group of members met to schedule some summer fun to get people out socializing in the neighbourhood. We have, in Rita Park, an amazing asset that few communities get the privilege to enjoy. This park was given to us as a gift under the condition that we never sell it and always maintain it for the community. Yet, seldom do we see neighbours using it.
This summer, we want to begin gradually reintroducing the neighbourhood to Rita Park with an open invitation to roast wieners and marshmallows on Friday nights. Wander down to the park and start a fire if you're the first ones there. We guarantee others will see the smoke and join you.
Those of you who have been around for a time will remember when we held an outdoor movie night in the park. It was a hit for young and old so we'd like to try it again. Later in August is a better time than early July because the days will be stating to shorten and we won't have to wait until 10:00 PM to start the projector! Given that a movie start time will still be a little later in the evening, we propose to hold a games night before the show. Horseshoes, washers, you name it, we can try it. This will entertain us while waiting until it's dark enough to watch the movie.
Please mark our dates on your calendars. We will send around more details (e.g., times) closer to the event. And, as always, we want community involvement so don't hesitate to submit your ideas. And, please remember that Rita Park is YOUR park. You can have your family reunion there, we can organize a community yard sale there, you can enjoy it any time you like. Don't wait for us to organize an event.
Cheers.
